What is My IP Address Explained

EmailTalk.org What is My IP address is a service that detects the public IP address of your computer that your are connecting to the internet with. IP address is a unique number that is assigned to your network card or your router that connects your network to the internet in the form of nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn where n is a number from 0 to 254. Example of an IP address is 192.168.1.10 or 72.14.247.104.

In most instances when you connect to the Internet from your home or office there are two IP addresses in play, an internal or private IP address and a public or Internet IP address. Public IP addresses are the only IP addresses recognized by the routers on the Internet that allow you to connect to websites, email servers, and other Internet service.

What are Public and Private IP Addresses

Why do you need private addresses then? There are two reasons, security and IP address sharing. Private IP addresses allow you to hide your computer from getting connected to by other computers directly from the Internet. There are only a limited numbers of public IP addresses available, about 4 billion, for the entire world. By assigning private addresses to a group of computers, you can share one public IP address through a router or firewall.

Why do you need to know your Public IP address?

There are a few instances when knowing your public IP address that you connect with can help you. If you need to connect from home to your office and having trouble, your IT administrator can use the IP address information to identify your connection and troubleshoot the issue. In some cases, your company may want to allow connection that comes from your Public IP address; they may use this information to open up the company firewall for your public IP. EmailTalk.org detects the public IP address that your computer is using.
